NAL 1    Theobroma cacao

 Morera, J. (1993)
Reaction of clones to Phytophthora palmivora. J. Morera, CATIE, Costa Rica. Personal Communication.

Derivation: NAcionaL.
Collected by Grieve.
Location: Bataan farm, Ecuador.

Notes:  Morera, 1993 [MOR93A] Seed taken from United Fruit Co.'s Tenguel plantation, Ecuador in 1930's.

Bartley, 1993a [BAR93A]. The seeds came from plantations which were contaminated with introduced material. Although the seed came from Nacional trees, the progeny produce all types including red fruits. Only the clones UF 705 bears some resemblance to a true National.

A possible source of confusion is that some Ecuadorian farmers referred to the "Nacional" type as "criollo" (= local material). They used the name "nacional" for the previously introduced varieties and their descendants, to distinguish them from other more recent introductions. This source of confusion may have already existed when the material was taken to Central America.
