PENTAGONA /R    Theobroma cacao

Bernoulli, 1869a [BER69A]. Fruit - five-sided resulting from the fusing of ridge pairs to give the appearance of five single ridges.

Notes:  Bartley, 1993a [BAR93A]. Name first used by Bernoulli, 1969 [BER69A] in the species Theobroma pentagona. The name refers to the five-sided fruit character which results from the fusing of ridge pairs to give appearance of five single ridges. This shape is also known as Lagarta or Alligator cacao. This shape is the extreme recessive shape and occurs in several different Criollo populations. For example, ICS 38, MXC 67, segregants from La Esmida and SGU 26 all have the pentagona fruit shape but are entirely different from each other in other respects.

Bartley, 1998a [BAR98A] The pentagona type was originally exclusively criollo and was so distinctive it was described by Bernoulli as a variety. The term is now used descriptively and pentagona "populations" may now contain some amelonado types. PENTAGONA /R and PENTAGONA /V are old selections probably made from plantations. They may be selections made from a set of seedlings of a pod of a pentagona. These are different from the collection of pentagona types PENTAGONA 1 [CRI] to PENTAGONA 18 [CRI] held in Costa Rica.

Collected by CATIE.

Notes:  Bartley, 1998a [BAR98A] Criollo varieties collected from elsewhere (Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama) and which were planted in different fields according to their origin. Any pods selected from these trees would most likely have produced seedlings with different shaped pods.

02/09/98 Duplicate identifier [CRI] added to differentiate the pentagona type collection of CATIE and the two old pentagona selections held in Palmira. Germoplasma de cacao en el CATIE entre 1947 y 1991, Programa II: Generacion y transferencia de tecnologia. IICA, San Jose, Costa Rica, pp. 49.

Collected by CATIE.
Location: Costa Rica.

Notes:  Morera et al., (1991) [MOR91A] Lists this material as open pollinated types from CATIE and which dispays forestero characteristics. This material is apparently not related to the PENTAGONA [CRI] material also in CATIE, and so has been given a separate duplicate identifier.
